New Toulouse Patois

I played around a bit this evening, just for fun, with the thought, what if New Toulouse would acquire it's own peculiar expressions. We do already have some inworld elsewhere, like the famous Hooo!

Of course real patois is developed by the community, but I thought I toss out a few things, like I said.. just for fun :)

Some words:

salut! - hello
cavva? - how are you? (C is pronounced like S)
bon, bone - good
comsi comsa - so-so
bone sewer!, a rover! - bye!

dacor - kk
mercy - thanks
dareen - yw
daisy lay! - sorry!
silvo play - please
saloo! - cheers!

mardi!, murde! - expression of surprise, mild curse ('mardi' is milder than 'murde')
bon cut! - cool!, nice!, something clever. (From 'bien cuit', meaning 'well-cooked')


A conversation between two of the locals could sound something like:

A: Salut!
B: Cavva!
A: Bon, and you?
B: Bon, bon. Were you at the party over at Jaques yesterday?
A: Murde! I forgot about that one! Well, I was occupied with RL anyway.
B: Speaking of which, AFK for 2 secs, daisy lay. BRB.
A: Dacor.
(2 minutes later)
B: Back.
A: Mama Cree (Carricre) was by. Did you see her latest house?
B: Yeah, mardi, looked really bon cut!
A: I know. Well, got to run, I send you that texture later.
B: Bon cut, mercy! Bone sewer!
A: A rover!

Ya know...I like the idea of us havin' our own talk in NT. Mama Cree, Ellis, Rudolfo...the rest of y'all got anything to add? Also, my understanding is that during that time period, it would've also sounded a lot like New Yorkers due to the Italian immigrants who influenced the sound of the dialect of that city too...

Hey, how 'bout "cher", as in "dear"? I like that one. Using Sin's "dialect":
A. Salut!
B. Cavva cher?!

Should we have the equivalent of "N'awlins" like that city? "N'louse"? "Entee?" Marinate on it for a while...

I like the idea of something like N'awlins. :)
N'louse is harder to say, since there are two consonants at the beginning. It'd likely soon develop into an 'o' or 'u' sound slipping in between them, making it N'olouse or N'ulouse.
Then again, talking about our li'l town as "No lose" has a certain ring to it. ;)


And 'cher' is a great one! Bon cut, Elle!

Nice post, and one that caused some thought on my part. Here's a few of mine:

Ayibobo! - as in "right on" or and affirmative expression.

Mojo - as in "power", like that Mama Cree she got some mojo!

ruckus juice - another term for moonshine

Ta-loo - New Toulouse

revoo - revenuer, the man who destroys ruckus juice stills

Goofer - to curse or hex

I've also enjoyed speaking whilst in Ta-loo in a sort of southern patois and slang that I have made up as I feel so inspired. Some of it is simply dropping a letter or two here and there from certain words, usually those endin' in ing and then adding an apostrophe where the g would be.

I'm also interested in seeing what sort of expressions are invented by residents. Aphorisms so to speak.

"Every mountain's got two valleys is what my mammy always used to say" as an expression of encouragement durin' hard times. . . that sort of thing.

I've also named de alligator dat lives in de bayou swamps "Bubba" foreshortened from Beelzebubba.

And I cannot wait to move my four rabbits - Cletus, Skeeter, Bocephus and Zeke into Ta-loo

And I heard Mama Cree use tree (from Fr. 'tres', of course) meaning 'very' tonight.

Hmm.. I wonder if we will have any loogaroos in the community? (From Fr. 'loup-garou) Every family with a decent history should have one. :)
Not sure yet what it would define though, heh..

Seein' as how, whilst visiting New Toulouse as Skusting Dagger from New Babbage, I would still likely have my same accent, such as it is. But if a New Yorker accent were called for, (and more likely for me than a New Awleanns drawl) I could certainly break out wit da Brooklyneese at da drop of a hat ovah dare.

Well now, I'd imagine you'd still have your New Babbage accent then! One thing I hope people will remember about our Taloo "patois" is that this is all in FUN. It's not meant to be an exact replica of New Orleans/Louisiana-speak or "bad French" as one future citizen of Taloo actually told me. This is a fun thing for those of us here. If you wish to adopt it, great. If not, that's great too. No worries, cher!

Just for fun, use if you like, as you like, play around with as you like. And it is not replicating, it is our unique Taloo tongue

I doubt Cajun or Creole use a rover or bone sewer. I suspect we're pretty relaxed about it (just as with everything else, hehe)

The words I first listed were simple ones you use everyday in chat, not meant to be any linguistic exercises. Just to add a little spice in the jambalaya.
Plus inworld phenomena like zombi (camper or bot), mooch (griefer or annoying newbie, means 'a fly').. Ummm.. any suggestion for 'blingtard'? ;)

I myself may chuck in a few mangled French inspired words on occasion, since I couldn't speak any version of American English, even if you bribed me with a bottle of whisky. Ok, maybe then. After the whisky.

One thing I have noticed... if one spends enough time in a certain place, one sometimes does pick up the local vernacular, if not the accent itself. Besides, I'm likely to be stuffing my mouth with some spicy crawdads and may no be doing much speaking at all.
Perhaps I should pick up a set of Miss Malalprop's semiphore signals!
